April 30, 2025 – We are deeply saddened by the deaths of three workers (Felix Jose Lopez (42), Felipe Mendez (25), and Reginald Magee (41)) and left two others hospitalized with injuries at the Port Arthur LNG construction site in Jefferson County, TX. We extend our condolences to their families, coworkers, and loved ones. This tragedy should not have happened. The companies involved — including Sempra and its contractors — must be held accountable. A full, independent investigation is needed to identify what went wrong and ensure it doesn’t happen again.
The victims, all from the Houston area, were part of a workforce building a facility designed to export liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Port Arthur LNG facility, a $13 billion project slated for completion in 2027-2028, is projected to emit 7.7 million tons of greenhouse gases annually. This highlights yet another example of the systemic issues in industry safety protocols, the human costs these communities face, and the prioritizing profit over worker welfare.
This follows a familiar pattern: industry promises jobs, but local residents are left with the pollution and the risk — not the benefit. Communities like Port Arthur deserve better than unsafe job sites and long-term health consequences. No one should lose their life at work. And no community should carry the burden of corporate negligence. We call on local, state, and federal officials to launch a transparent investigation, enforce real safety protections, and halt the unchecked expansion of LNG and petrochemical facilities in frontline communities.
We must put people over profit.
