WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump Administration’s reckless re-approval of the CP2 LNG project yesterday, March 19, 2025, is an assault on the health, environment, and economic well-being of American communities.

The Hip Hop Caucus condemns the conditional approval of CP2 LNG, a project that threatens the well-being of the American people, a death sentence for frontline communities already choking on pollution, and ignores the pleas of community leaders and residents who have consistently voiced their opposition to such projects.

As Travis Dardar, an indigenous fisherman from Cameron, Lousisana has stated, “Fossil fuel companies and their government allies moved LNG projects into the region and turned our fishing community upside down. Calcasieu Pass LNG has decimated our fishing industry, and we won’t recover if CP2 LNG is built next to it.”

This project is estimated to generate pollution equivalent to the emissions from over 47 million gasoline-powered cars or 53 coal-fired power plants, exacerbating the current air quality issues and climate impacts of the region. CP2 could cut short the lives of up to 9 people every year in the Gulf region – our loved ones, our neighbors – all while racking up to $134 million in health costs annually. This is not just about statistics. It is about children struggling to breathe, families burdened with medical bills and entire communities being sacrificed for corporate profit. CP2 will drive up energy bills, forcing working families to pay more while fossil fuel CEOs pocket billions. In December 2024 the Biden administration did an analysis that found more LNG exports will make it more expensive for families to heat their homes and put food on the table.

In light of these harms that impact the wallets, health, and communities, it is clear that the American people do not want this project. Yet, it has only been 59 days since this Administration began and we continue to see the prioritization of the fossil fuel industry’s greed over the well-being, health, and future of our communities. The Department of Energy’s approval of CP2 LNG is a betrayal of frontline communities, working families, and our collective future.

This is not inevitable. It is time to fight back. Join us in rejecting CP2 LNG and demanding clean energy solutions that put people – not polluters – first.
