NEW ORLEANS, LA (August 12, 2025) – The Katrina Commemoration Inc. and Hip Hop Caucus are calling on communities across the country to join in a national 60-second moment of silence on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 11:20 a.m. CT to honor the lives lost and forever changed by Hurricane Katrina. The moment of silence will be broadcast live from the lower 9th ward levees during the 20th Annual Katrina Commemoration.

The commemoration will serve not only as a solemn remembrance, but also as a reminder of the urgent need for climate and environmental justice, disaster preparedness, and equitable recovery efforts.

“The moment of silence is a way for our nation to come together in unity, honor the lives and stories of the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and affirm our hope for a future where every community is safe, supported, and thriving,” said Sess 4-5, founder of the Katrina Commemoration Inc. “For nearly two decades, Katrina Commemoration Inc. and Hip Hop Caucus have stood together to organize the annual second line and rally, making sure the lessons of Katrina are never forgotten and our vision for justice remains strong.”

“We invite people everywhere to pause, reflect, and recommit to building a future where no community is left behind when disaster strikes,” said Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., President & CEO of Hip Hop Caucus. “Katrina was more than a storm—it was a test of our nation’s values, and we must ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes that cost so many lives.”

Since 2006, Katrina Commemoration Inc. has worked to honor the legacy of those impacted by the storm through community events, advocacy, and public education. Partnering with Hip Hop Caucus for this year’s milestone anniversary, the organizations are mobilizing people across the United States to stand in solidarity with New Orleans and the Gulf South communities that continue to face the compounded challenges of climate change, economic inequity, and environmental racism.

How to Participate:
At 11:20 a.m. CT on August 29, 2025, individuals, organizations, and institutions are encouraged to stop what they are doing for 60 seconds to reflect in silence.
